Although not as widespread as fossil fuels or heat pumps, district heating in Switzerland is gradually increasing its contribution to the residential energy mix. This system, which enables efficient distribution of centrally-produced heat, often from renewable sources or heat recovery, will cover around 3.8% of buildings in 2022, compared with 1.1% in 1990. Its growth reflects its potential for reducing CO2 emissions and improving energy efficiency, especially in urban areas where its implementation is more logical and cost-effective.
